This short film has the struggles of a one day shoot with a short time schedule and a small, inexperienced crew. One actor had to leave at early, thus, we had to shoot scenes separately and out of order. The light also changed from shot to shot at the behest of the director, and chagrin of myself. The challenge here was running around to 9 different locations, with 9 different actors. The director had previously scouted Long Beach for his spots. Then with myself, the director, the choreographer, and the driver, we all hopped around LB to meet a different actor, all in the span of 2 days. The client wanted a straightforward interview segment for their YouTube channel. Our job was shoot in their dojo, get a presentable interview, and direct live gymnastics training for B-roll. My job as camera operator, was to shoot on the fly and follow the gold medalist, while making each shot interesting as possible. Some challenges involved lighting the dark gym, which we overcame by opening up any of the sliding garage doors to let in some nice natural light. We were also working with a skeleton crew, which led to certain people doing multiple tasks, but we worked out a system of streamlined communication between the crew. Due to Covid, our entire awards ceremony would be virtual. This required to shoot and edit our dailies in weekly, in preparation for the full project due a month later. While following along a written letter, I tried to bring to light the bond that the Martinez family held onto during tough times. I captured distinct shots that articulated the daughter’s and father’s headspaces. In post, I was able to touch up my own shots color and add graphics with the County’s logo.
